Writing these pages has given me an intense joy of recall and reunion. The named profiles and histories are but a small portion of the splendid people I have known, loved and respected.

For all those who have given me friendship and love, joy and devotion, inspiration and example in these my many lives, I pray with all my gratitude the opening lines of every Requiem, lines that have always made us tremble yet given us hope and comfort -

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord
And let thy perpetual light shine upon them.
